After a series of protests that started last week as road blockades in the main highways of Guatemala, it has come to its 8th day with more than 180 points blocked in the country, between main highways, roads, and entrances to the Capital City and main towns. This civil disobedience started after General Prosecutor Consuelo Porras decided to start a penal case against the political party Semilla, who won by a landslide the General Elections this past August. Porras has been criminalizing Semilla and has raided the offices of the primary authority in elections in Guatemala, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal. Local and international experts named the raids a flagrant violation of the People's Will and their right to choose freely.
Now, after more than a week, the blockades have increased nationwide, and the primary demand of all the groups blocking the roads is that Consuelo Porras and her staff resign from the General Prosecutor's office. While there have been some violent incidents between government forces and people against the protests, most protests have been peaceful.
