STORYLINE:
Thousands of Iraqis rallied Friday in Baghdad to protest against Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip and to show support for the Palestinian people.
At noon, thousands of people, most of them followers of Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, gathered in Tahrir Square in downtown Baghdad, and many of them waved Iraqi and Palestinian flags in a sign of solidarity with Palestinians. Some demonstrators set fire to a large Israeli flag at the scene.
The demonstrators chanted: "No, no, America" and "No, no, Israel" and raised banners denouncing the West's silence toward the devastation witnessed in Gaza due to the Israeli attacks.
Also in Baghdad, thousands of demonstrators rallied in the Sunni Mosque of Abu Hanifa and surrounding streets in the Adhamiya neighborhood in northern part of the city.
The demonstrations came as the Iraqi government decided late on Wednesday night to dispatch medical and humanitarian aid in coordination with the Egyptian government to help the besieged Palestinians.
