A Labour government would aim to achieve clean power for the UK by 2030, said Sir Keir Starmer, as he told business leaders the "green agenda" offered "the single biggest opportunity we have as a country in decades" and was essential for the UK's security.

Speaking to business leaders at a conference fringe event, the Labour leader said: "Renewables and clean power gives us security. If there's one thing we've learned in the last 18 months is that if people like Putin can put his boot on our throat, then all of you are going to be paying a lot more for the energy that you need."

"Clean power is not just about those that are actually producing the power. It's also about ensuring that all of you in your businesses for years to come have stable, secure, cheap energy, which is not exposed on the international stage in the way we've been exposed in the last 18 months. And that would be a game changer."
