The 2023 National Town Criers’ Championship

In medieval Britain, criers played a crucial role as messengers, sharing news, legal verdicts, proclamations, and advertisements. Recognizable by their elegant attire and royal protection, they were the primary communicators of their time. In our modern age, it might seem that criers have faded into history.

For the first time, this quirky championship came to Rye. Contestants came from across the land to impress a panel of 4 distinguished judges with even one entry, Kurt de Smet from Oudenaarde, in Belgium. Success at this championship depends on more than just being loud; clarity, diction, inflection, and attire are also crucial. A proper proclamation begins with the traditional cry of "Oyez, oyez, oyez!" and ends with the resounding "God save the King."

Sunshine and good humour was the order of the day and this marks the 70th anniversary of the championships.

Winner was Kurt de Smet from Oudenaarde, Belgium
Runner up was Alistair Chisholm from Dorchester
