A heroic air conditioning engineer climbed down a building’s roof to save a boy trapped outside a fourth-floor window in eastern China.

Video filmed in the city of Linyi in Shandong Province on October 14 shows a boy, perching precariously on the outside of a fourth-floor window with his legs trembling and tears streaming down his face.

Two air conditioning engineers, Zhang Qingtao and Yang Xiaoqiang, who happened to be having a meal under the building, heard the cries for help and promptly abandoned their food to investigate the situation.

"The boy's condition was dire at that moment. He could only grasp the window with one hand, his slippers were clearly unsuitable for the situation, and he had only half a foot on the window ledge," explained Zhang Qingtao. Seeing this, he and his colleague, Yang Xiaoqiang, rushed back to their vehicle to retrieve some tools.

"We are both service engineers at Midea's after-sales service centre and our car's trunk always contains rope tools used for air conditioner installation and maintenance. We thought of using these tools to rescue the child," Zhang said.

Armed with the tools, the two men sprinted to the floor where the boy was trapped and ascended to the rooftop. With no visual on the child from the rooftop, their anxiety heightened. At this critical moment, Zhang said to his partner, "There's no time, skip the five-point harness, just tie a rope and go down."

Yang Xiaoqiang tied one end of the rope around his waist, firmly held the safety rope with both hands, and gradually let it out as Zhang Qingtao descended.

Zhang Qingtao seized the right moment, gripping the safety rope with one hand and grabbing the air conditioning unit of the fifth floor with the other. One foot was on the air conditioner on the fourth floor, while the other moved slowly toward the fifth-floor balcony. He yelled to Yang Xiaoqiang on the rooftop, "Let go!" and then proceeded to enter the room.

"Child, don't be afraid, Uncle is here to rescue you," were Zhang’s first reassuring words as he entered the room. He reached behind the young boy, using his arms to secure the child's armpits and stabilise his body, then gently lifted the boy from the window ledge and brought him safely inside.

Upon investigation, it was revealed that the boy was six years old, and his parents were away at work, leaving him home alone. Fortunately, thanks to the swift and heroic rescue efforts of Zhang Qingtao and Yang Xiaoqiang, the boy emerged from the ordeal unharmed.
