River level rises sparking flood fears on Bangkok outskirts
Rising water levels at Thailand's Chao Phraya River sparked flood fears among residents on the outskirts of Bangkok.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation issued an advisory on October 8 warning that the river could overflow across several provinces including the capital Bangkok in the following days.
The country's irrigation department said rains a monsoon trough was forecasted to cause rains from October 8 to 11 in the northern, northeastern, central, and southern regions of Thailand. Floods were expected to flow into low-lying areas along the Chao Phraya River until Sunday, October 15, as water is released from the Chao Phraya Dam, officials said.
Residents were urged to monitor the water level, while local authorities were instructed to put up flood barriers to mitigate the flooding.
Local media reported that the Chao Phraya River has recently burst its banks, submerging around 200 homes, fields, and plantations in up to 28 inches of flood Ayutthaya on October 15.
Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
Bangkok and large parts of the north and northeast of the country have been swamped with flash floods from tropical thunderstorms.
