Thousands of bugs covered a fisherman's car, leaving him unable to drive home.

The local parked his modified army jeep near Pa Sakcholasit Dam while he went angling but was shocked when he returned to find the swarm of mayflies had already taken over his vehicle in Lopburi province, Thailand, on September 27.

Footage shows the mayflies - which inhabit unpolluted wetlands such as lakes and rivers - perched all over his jeep while some of them flew around, bothered by the light.

The man was even more horrified when he checked under the seat with a flashlight, and more were seen covering the floor.

He said he was afraid to chase them away in case they flew all over him so he shook the jeep a little trying to disturb them. However, he still had to wait for most of the bugs to leave before he was able to drive home.

Mayflies are aquatic insects belonging to the order Ephemeroptera. They are one of the oldest groups of flying insects, with fossils dating back over 300 million years. Mayflies are found all over the world in clean freshwater habitats, though they are absent from Antarctica.
