A kind diner gave a toddler three dollars for her third birthday when he overheard her family celebrating.

Footage shows the grandfather giving the banknotes to the child named May Madi, who was happy to receive the surprise present from a random stranger in Seattle, Washington State, on October 4.

She smiled at the woman from the other table when she greeted her before turning to her mum and showing the money.

Her mother said: ‘Love is all around us. The grandpa sitting near us made the day extra special. My daughter didn't understand yet what they were, but she was thrilled to have received something.

‘She also got heartfelt and cheerful wishes for her birthday from everyone in the restaurant. Despite not knowing what they meant, Madi was thrilled.'
