STORYLINE:

Chinese-invested Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) in northwest Cambodia's Siem Reap province commenced operations on Monday, raising hope for tourism growth.

The SAI has been invested by the Angkor International Airport Investment (Cambodia) Co., Ltd., an affiliate of China's Yunnan Investment Holdings Ltd.

Sinn Chanserey Vutha, Cambodian State Secretariat of Civil Aviation's Undersecretary of State noted that the SAI is the result of close cooperation between China and Cambodia.

"This achievement is the result of close cooperation between China and Cambodia under the Belt and Road Initiative."

Covering a parcel of 700 hectares, the SAI is located in Sotr Nikum district, about 40 kilometers from the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archeological Park.

The airport will be able to handle 7 million air passengers annually from 2024 and up to 12 million passengers annually from 2040.

"We expect that this airport will be attractive (to airlines) and respond to the growing demand from the tourism sector and the passengers."

When it comes to expectations for the future development of Siem Reap province, Chhay Sivlin, president of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents hoped that more tourists and investors from China could come here to visit and invest.
