STORYLINE:

U.S. retail sales rose by 0.7 percent in September from the previous month, according to data released by the U.S. Commerce Department on Tuesday.

Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for September, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were 704.9 billion U.S. dollars, up 3.8 percent year over year.

Total sales for the July through September period were up 3.1 percent from the same period a year ago. The July to August percent change was revised from up 0.6 percent to up 0.8 percent.

Retail trade sales were up 0.7 percent from August 2023, and up 3.0 percent above last year. Nonstore retailers were up 8.4 percent from last year, while food services and drinking places were up 9.2 percent from September 2022.
