STORYLINE:
 
The Phoenix Park Industrial Estate in Trinidad and Tobago is the first Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project in the Caribbean.
 
Designed and built by China's Beijing Construction Engineering Group, the industrial estate covers an area of about 580,000 square meters.
 
A Trinidadian minister has said that the long-term benefit "is tremendous."

"Trinidad and Tobago was delighted to be the first country in the Caribbean to have signed onto the Belt and Road Initiative. And the Belt and Road Initiative is a significant project both from the point of view. For the People's Republic of China, it represents an investment into another territory, and for us, that assistance allows us to do for the development, and especially through the industrial estate, it means additional investments. It means technology, best-in-class products and services. So the long-term benefit is tremendous."
 
The minister is scheduled to visit China next month to attend the 16th China-Latin America and the Caribbean Business Summit and the sixth China International Import Expo.

"What do we get out of it? Opportunity. This opportunity for our exporters to export some of the finely-produced commodities and goods in Trinidad and Tobago that may find some appeal in the Chinese market, and then also to seek investors into the Phoenix Park Industrial Estate and into other parts of Trinidad and Tobago. So we have high expectations."
