Savvy mum's trick for cutting wedding costs with £20 dress for the big day Part 2/2
A savvy mum has revealed how she managed to cut costs for her wedding – finding her dress for only £20.
Jemma Pinches, 36, wanted to look the part on her big day without the hefty price tag, so decided to shop online for her all-important white dress.
After using the second-hand site to source her children’s clothes, the mum-of-four, from Worcester, thought she’d try her luck with finding a wedding dress – and little did she know that she’d find her dream dress for well under £100.
Sharing her discovery to her 17,000 followers on TikTok (@ladyjemma ) she detailed how she felt “a million dollars” in the bargain buy.
“I knew I had champagne taste and a lemonade budget so opted to go with looking on Vinted,” Jemma, an accounts executive, told NeedToKnow.co.uk.
“I just thought I’d have a quick browse to see if people sold on their dresses used or unused.
“I just kept looking until I found the perfect one – it is a risk because you haven’t tried it on, but I was willing to take the risk to save £1,000.”
With the cost of living affecting childcare costs, bills and mortgages, the mum-of-four “didn’t want to spend what we didn’t have” on a pricey gown.
Despite wanting to save cash, Jemma had a niggling worry in the back of her head that the dress would be completely different to the one advertised online.
She said: “[It] was always in the back of my mind, would it be different to the pictures?
“Would it be very poor condition or ripped, would it smell?“But also, would it fit?
“But I trusted my gut with this one.”
Her friends and family couldn’t believe how much money she had saved, with people asking to see evidence that she managed to find such an unbelievable deal.
She added: “No one believed I got such a bargain, I had to keep getting my phone out to show them my Vinted transaction!”
Once she nailed her budget dream dress, Jemma focused on keeping her big day as low cost as possible, with a surprising hack to keep the wedding celebrations cheap.
Jemma got legally married on a Wednesday, which only cost £45 with two witnesses – saving the majority of her budget for the celebration with her friends and family.
She said “I found a venue that looked good and needed minimum decorations and was cheap.
“I booked it as an ‘evening party’ rather than a ‘wedding’ – as soon as you say the wedding word everything gets expensive!
“I got the room and table decorations off an exchange site, a kind lady gave me them all.
“My daughter also wore a Vinted bridesmaid dress that happened to come in a bundle anyway, my sons and husband wore matching outfits we had already, and it all came together nicely!
“Doing the ceremony and party separately saved us £1,000 and I’d do it again tomorrow – it was so stress-free!”
Sharing her top tips for other brides-to-be, Jemma suggested looking on second-hand sites and Facebook Marketplace to source decorations and outfits for members of your wedding crew.
She recommended: “Look on Vinted or Facebook etc for all bits, veils, table decs, bridal belts, bridesmaids and page boy outfits.
“It’s all on there, barely used, and for a fraction of the price.
“Don’t be afraid to ask – I got given so much stuff.
“You just have to shop around, don’t worry about pleasing anyone but you, it’s your day.”
