STORYLINE:

Special representative of the UN secretary-general for sustainable energy for all told Xinhua that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) can advance renewable energy adoption across the Global South countries

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): SHI XIAOMENG, Xinhua correspondent
"According to your observation, how has China's Belt and Road Initiative transitioned towards a greener approach in the past decade? How do you think that BRI can align with the UN sustainable energy for all?"

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): DAMILOLA OGUNBIYI, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All
"This is actually my second time in Beijing and I love it. It was great coming from the airport and seeing all the developments, the EVs, electric buses, solar everywhere, solar farm. So it was really nice to see in practice what China is doing with renewable energy.
I think there are many ways we can work together, especially on renewable energy.
There's been a lot of work done already, especially on my continent, Africa, with the Belt and Road initiative. I think moving forward, we will see a lot more transformative green energy projects, solar projects, wind projects coming about.
So we're looking at ways of transferring skills, proper South-South collaboration, bringing some of the amazing Chinese manufacturing capability to the continent, but also to Southeast Asia.
We have an amazing initiative called REMI, which is a renewable energy manufacturing initiative. We have one in Africa and one for Southeast Asia that looks at solar panels, lithium batteries, and EVs, using Chinese skills and knowledge to train people from Africa and Southeast Asia.
So we're really, really excited how open the Chinese have been to really allow other countries to understand their technology. We see the next decade as a really fruitful decade for this initiative."
