STORYLINE:

The latest round of violence between Israel and Hamas, which rules Gaza, began on Oct. 7 when Hamas launched a rare surprise attack on Israel.

Israel retaliated with airstrikes and a blockade that cut off water, electricity, fuel, and other supplies to Gaza.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): OSAMA ALI ABO HEZEMA, Resident in Deir al-Balah in Gaza Strip
"My name is Osama Ali Abo Hezema. I'm one of the residents of Deir al-Balah.
Since the start of this war, we have suffered from the lack of electricity that bakeries rely on to produce bread. We also suffer from a complete lack of drinking water.
Every day, when we go to bakeries, we wait 6 to 8 hours to get a small amount of bread, a maximum of 3 kilos.
The number of displaced people is very large. There are 305 people from my family and relatives who are displaced.
If I had gas or firewood, I would use them for cooking, but nothing is left. The period of war and suffering increases. We want any necessities for life."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): GAMAL HUSSEIN ABDEL-AAL FATAYER, Resident in Deir al-Balah in Gaza Strip
"My name is Gamal Hussein Abdel-Aal Fatayer. I'm one of the residents of Deir al-Balah. I came here to buy some bread. I have to wait 8 to 10 hours to get them. I have 30 displaced people in my house currently. The financial situation is very bad.
There is no electricity and water services and no flour. The whole situation is tragic.
I went several times to Al-Shuhada Hospital to bring water bottles for the injured. And I come here to buy bread. There is no drinkable water or water to use in the bathroom. The economic situation is also very difficult."
