Superstitious Thai villagers worship a giant termite hill growing in the middle of a wooden pavilion.

Residents believing the huge mound of earth would bring good luck paid respects to it as it sat at the Wat Paet Kaew temple in Ang Thong province, Thailand.

Termites had chewed a hole through the dilapidated pavilion's wooden floor, then covered up the opening in dried earth as they expanded their hive.

The hill has remained undisturbed for years, growing to about four feet in height, until it became a 'lucky' shrine in the area.

Footage shows religious images like figurines and portraits laid down at the base of the hill. Residents said they were baffled as the termites had not yet consumed the entire wooden structure.

A villager named Tao, 64, said: 'If you look closely, the termite mound resembles a hermit. It has been growing through the floor for many years, but no one here dares to destroy it. Some people come by to pay their respects before the lottery draw.'
