Devotees crowded the streets for a religious Hindu festival in Thailand.

The faithful gathered outside the Wat Khaek temple in Bangkok to mark Vijayadashami Day - the end of the Navaratri Festival honouring the Hindu goddess Durga, on October 24.

Ornate palanquins were paraded through Bangkok's Silom, Chong Nonsi, and Sathon Districts before being returned to the temple.

Spectacular bonfires to fete the gods from the Hindu pantheon were also held, while food and beverage stalls were set up for the festival-goers.

Authorities said the venues were well-lighted and strictly guarded to protect the estimated thousands of attendees.

The parade took place on the last day of the Navaratri Festival to celebrate Durga's victory over Mahishasura, an evil shape-shifting bovine demon.

There are four other Hindu festivals that share the same name, but the most significant is the Sharad Navratri Festival held during the early autumn.
