A female tourist died and another person was injured when the glass bridge they were walking on shattered in Indonesia.

The group of around 11 holidaymakers had visited the tourist attraction at The Geong in Central Java, and had paused in the middle of the glass structure to take selfies on October 25.

But as they posed for photos, a loud cracking sound was heard before several panels they were standing on suddenly shattered, plunging a woman identified only as FA, 49, 30ft to the ground.

She was rushed to the hospital but was reported to have died in transit.

Another person identified by officers as AI, 41, suffered minor injuries, while two other tourists near FA had managed to save themselves by grabbing onto the safety railings.

Police were called to investigate the scene in the Limpakuwus Pine Forest in Banyumas Regency.

Banyumas Police Chief Kombes Edy Suranta Sitepu said: 'Earlier at around 10:00 WIB, we received information that there was an accident where someone fell from a glass bridge. When the glass broke, two people had time to hold on to the safety on the glass bridge; then two more people fell down.

'We will also conduct examinations and investigations on managers and so on, including witnesses.'

Employees at The Geong said the bridge was made of tempered glass panels around 1cm thick. They said the attraction was checked and cleaned every day, adding there were no irregularities found before the accident.

Edi Suseno, manager of The Geong amusement park, said the bridge has been closed for evaluation and that they were ready to cooperate with police for investigations.
