A motorcyclist was nearly strangled by a dangling cable on a busy road in southern China.

Terrifying video filmed in Yibin City in Sichuan Province on June 21 shows a rider named Chen Fayang being suddenly yanked from his motorbike by a looped cable wire which ensnared his neck.

Eyewitness Mr Zhang, who was behind Chen said that Chen was suddenly thrown off his bike by the cable. In an act of instinctual preservation, Zhang swerved left and braked hard to avoid hitting the fallen rider.

"When we rushed over, Chen was already choking. Everyone quickly came to his aid and called the police," Zhang said.

Further investigation revealed that the snare was an abandoned black cable, looped perfectly to ensnare Chen as he drove by. After the traumatic ordeal, Chen was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to Chen, he sustained multiple soft tissue injuries and a mild concussion. "I now need support even to get out of bed," he said, describing the intensity of his abdominal pain. His employer has graciously covered the medical bills as the responsible party for the dangerous cable remains unidentified.

On June 25, Yibin Traffic Police revealed that the hazardous cable belonged to the China Unicom Yibin Company and was an unused fibre-optic line. Recent adverse weather conditions in the city had apparently played a role, as heavy rain and gusty winds had dislodged the cable, deeming the accident as unforeseen.

China Unicom Yibin Company representatives subsequently met with Chen's family and local police to clarify the situation. They explained that the fibre-optic line had been out of use for many years, and its fall was an accident, not due to human error. The two parties have agreed to discuss compensation after Chen's recovery.
