STORYLINE:
The 2023 Chinese film "Yangzi's Confusion" by debutant filmmaker Li Jue opened the 11th edition of the Asian Film Festival Barcelona (AFFBCN) on Wednesday.
The inaugural film tells the story of the ten-year-old Yangzi, who discovered that her mother gave up the custody of Yangzi after divorce, causing tension between the two.
Running until Nov. 5, the festival boasts over a hundred films from 25 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between China and Spain, some 22 films in this year's festival are from China, five more than in 2022.
Twelve of the Chinese films are feature-length films, two are short films, and eight are by director Wang Chao in a retrospective devoted to the work of the renowned filmmaker.
SOUNDBITE (Spanish): MENENE GRAS, Director of the Asian Film Festival Barcelona
"The story of Chinese cinema is very long. We have a director like Wang Chao, who's from an older generation, but the youngest director at the festival is also Chinese, whose film is opening tonight and who's only 33 years old."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Barcelona, Spain.
