Horrific train accident claims multiple lives in southern India, rescue ongoing

At Least 11 people have died and more than 50 left injured after two trains were involved in a horrific collision in southern India's Andhra Pradesh.

This incident happened in the Vizianagaram district of the state on October 29.

Visuals from the aftermath of the accident showed heart-breaking scenes of the devastation that this accident caused. The coaches of the trains were derailed and in a mangled state. A crowd had gathered at the spot of this train accident where a rescue operation seemed to be underway. Injured people were being carried on stretchers to the ambulance.

According to a report, the accident happened between the Kantakapalli and Alamanda railway stations when a passenger train which was travelling from Visakhapatnam to Rayagada hit the Visakhapatnam-Palasa passenger train from behind. Several coaches derailed as a result of this collision.

After receiving information, teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the spot to conduct the rescue operation which also involved the local administration.

The number of deaths resulting from the train collision in Andhra Pradesh has now climbed to 11.

The victims were rushed for treatment to hospitals after being rescued. This accident has also led to other trains on this route being cancelled and diverted as well. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the victims of this accident and also announced a sum of Rs 2 lakh ($ 2402.33) for the next of kin of those who died and Rs 50,000 ($600.55).

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy also announced compensation for the victims with Rs 10 lakh ($12,010.97) for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 ($600.55) to the ones who suffered injuries from other states.
