STORYLINE:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced on Monday that the Blue Circle, a marine plastic pollution control model from China, won the 2023 Champions of the Earth award.

Launched in Taizhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, the pilot project uses Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain technologies to trace and recycle marine plastic waste.

STANDUP (English): ZHENG MENGYU, Xinhua correspondent
"This phone case in my hand seems to be normal, but actually this is made out of the discarded plastic bottles from the ocean right behind me. What's more, if you scan the QR Code, you can find out how it is produced by using blockchain technology."

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): CHEN GUANGHUI, Co-founder of Zhejiang Lanjing Technology Co., Ltd.
"We have developed a visual tracing system based on blockchain technology. By scanning the code on products made from recycled materials, you can see who collected the raw materials, transported them, processed them, and who manufactured them. It makes everything transparent. The project is recognized by international brands and consumers."

So far, over 200 enterprises in Zhejiang has been involved in the Blue Circle.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): FU XIANWEI, Director of operations, Veolia Huafei Polymer Technology (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd.
"We make cleansed and melted marine plastics into particles that can be used in packaging materials, industrial manufacturing, clothing and home textiles, etc.
We believe that in the future, with the successful replication of the Blue Circle model, the market of marine plastics recycling is vast and there is greater potential to be tapped."

With the successful operation of the project, an operating mechanism on marine plastic pollution control is taking shape.

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): XIE HUAN, Director of Taizhou Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau
"We know that (marine plastic waste recycling) is a novelty. So we should set up examples, raise public awareness of marine protection, and let more people participate in it.
The biggest achievement is that we have recycled some marine wastes along the city's coastline, and an operating mechanism on marine plastic pollution control is gradually taking shape."
