A lucky cow was saved from a stinky tight spot when it was rescued from a drain near a bus stand in central India's Madhya Pradesh.

The kind-hearted rescue happened in Shahdol district of the state on 30 October.

Video showed the cow stuck in a drain too small for it to move, let alone climb out.

Rescuers soon arrived at the spot, which was outside a local hotel, and coordinated their efforts to save the animal.

They tied ropes around its body and with a mighty heave the men from the Atal Kamadhenu Gausewak Sanstham, a Hindu cow-rescue group, were able to pull the bovine out of the cramped drain.

It took about one hour to rescue the fortunate beast.

In a hurry to escape the scene of its earlier misfortune, it tried to run off while still tied up.

After a brief delay while the kind-hearted helpers quickly untied it, the animal hot-footed it out of there.
