Woman killed by falling tree as Storm Ciaran's fierce winds hit Spain
A woman was killed by a falling tree in the Spanish capital city of Madrid on Thursday after 100-km-an-hour winds and heavy rain hit the country with the arrival of the Atlantic storm Ciaran.
The accident happened in the Chamberi district in the centre of Madrid. The city's Fire Brigade confirmed the woman's death, adding that three more people had been injured in the incident.
Madrid remains on red alert for extreme weather on Thursday, with all of the city's parks closed to the public due to the risk of falling trees and branches. The alert is expected to last until the early hours of Friday.
The Fire Brigade in the Madrid Region has received 607 reports of wind damage and attended 124 incidents between midnight and 1 p.m. local time. Emergency services in other regions reported a similar picture.
The centre and north of Spain were also on red alert, with winds of up to 160 km per hour whipping up nine-meter waves along the coast. Roads, as well as walkways near the seafront in cities such as San Sebastian, have been closed.
The strong winds badly affected Bilbao's Loiu airport, which saw 32 flights either cancelled or diverted to other airports before 10 a.m., affecting thousands of passengers.
Other airports in northern Spain, such as Asturias and Vigo, were also affected, which meant cancelling some flights from Madrid.
Train services were also disrupted in the north and centre of Spain due to damaged power lines.
