A two-metre long Fraser's Dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) was found stranded on a beach in the Pasir Jambak area of Padang, Indonesia, on Saturday 4 November.

Locals quickly tried to return the dolphin -- which appeared to be in a poor state -- to the sea.

Fortunately the animal slowly recovered after entering the water.

"The dolphin looked faint. Several times the dolphin spun around and had no balance," said eyewitness Juabdi. He, like many Indonesians, goes by one name.

Because it was still circling near the shore even after being returned to the sea, residents and fishermen decided to guide the dolphin to open sea using small boats.

"We directed them not to return to the seashore and we watched for approximately three hours. The dolphins were already able to swim in the wide sea," said a fisherman named Jery.

Seeking to explain the stranding, an officer from Indonesia's Directorate of Ocean and Space Management, Hendrisman, said: "It is suspected that the dolphins left their group. It is possible that they heard ultrasonic sounds on the shore, because no injuries were found on the dolphins' bodies."
