Ireland’s economic successes cannot be taken for granted amid evidence of a wider world in “deep trouble” on many fronts, Micheal Martin has warned.

The country’s deputy leader told his Fianna Fail party’s annual conference that Ireland faces many problems, including the challenges posed by a rising and ageing population.

The Irish government has run budget surpluses in recent years buoyed by tax takes from multinational corporations with bases in the country.

Fianna Fail leader Mr Martin, whose party is in three-way coalition along with Fine Gael and the Greens, used his ard fheis speech in Dublin on Saturday evening to stress the need to secure Ireland’s economic future.
