Thai police hold mall gunman simulation following October's deadly shooting in Bangkok
Thai police held a shopping mall shooting simulation following the deadly gun attack in Bangkok last month.
Officers coordinated with local organisations to conduct the emergency simulation at the Robinson Chachoengsao shopping centre in Chachoengsao province on November 2.
Police Colonel Sathit Mitrak, the superintendent of Mueang Chachoengsao Police, and local Governor Chonlatee Youngtrong oversaw the exercise as a special tactical team armed with shields and bulletproof vests responded to the 'shooter' - in this scenario, a former police officer who had injured shoppers on his rampage.
After neutralising the pretend gunman, the officers cordoned off the area, then sent bomb disposal experts, forensic police, and investigators to the scene.
Another unit assisted rescue teams in transporting the 'injured' to hospitals.
Police Colonel Sathit said: 'The drill was held to enhance the readiness and efficiency of officers in responding to such situations to minimise losses. It would also help to boost the confidence of both tourists and locals that the police can respond promptly and effectively when needed.'
On October 3, a teenage boy allegedly barged into the upmarket Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok and opened fire on shoppers, killing two and injuring five others.
The attack came almost a year to the day when gunman Panya Khamrab, 34, killed 36 people and injured 10 others in a rampage at a nursery in Nong Bua Lamphu province in the north of the country on October 6, 2022. He later turned a gun on himself during the spree.
Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has vowed to tighten gun control in Thailand, which has one of the highest gun ownership and gun homicide rates in Asia.
