Quick-thinking driver steps on brakes to avoid jaywalkers crossing road
This is the dramatic moment an alert driver stepped on the brakes to avoid jaywalkers crossing a road in Thailand.
The road user was driving in front of the Index Living Mall in Nonthaburi province when two pedestrians suddenly appeared from the adjacent lane and darted in front of him on October 26.
Dashcam footage shows how the quick-thinking motorist stopped the car just in time to prevent a collision. The women nodded in thanks, then proceeded to move to the sidewalk.
The shocked driver said: 'They were in a place they were not supposed to be. I want to warn other people not to cross the road like this.'
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
