A cable narrowly missed passing vehicles after it snapped from a newly inaugurated bridge in northern China.

The video was filmed in Shijiazhuang in Hebei Province on November 5.

A stay cable on the Huto River Bridge suddenly snapped, plummeted onto the roadway and burst into flames.

As flames engulfed the bridge's surface, a quick-thinking motorist took a fire extinguisher from his car to try to put out the fire.

The bridge, known locally as the internet-famous bridge due to its popularity on social media, had only been opened to traffic on September 28 this year.

The construction, design, engineering, firefighting, and traffic police units arrived on site immediately to address the situation. Fortunately, the cable's fall resulted in no casualties or damage to vehicles, and by midnight on November 6, the bridge was reopened to traffic.

Initial analyses suggested that a short circuit at the joint of the electrical wires in the illumination line of the No. 2 stay cable caused the fire, leading to the cable's eventual deformation and rupture. Moving forward, the relevant departments will rapidly investigate the cause of the fire and carry out urgent repairs on the damaged stay cable. In addition, the bridge will undergo intensified inspections and maintenance to ensure its safety for the public.

The Huto River Bridge is a hallmark project of the municipal improvement program for Fuxing Avenue in Shijiazhuang City. With a total length of approximately 2,208 metres and a span combination of 380 metres, its main tower rises to 146.5 metres, supported by 62 spatially arranged twisting stay cables. The design of these cables is particularly noteworthy as it represents a national first for a single-tower, cable-stayed bridge with a reel-type spatial cable plane.
