A trio of giant pandas transformed into adorable "fur balls" in their earnest attempt to dodge the rain in a zoo in southern China.

Funny video filmed in Chongqing on November 3 shows three panda cubs comically tucking their heads into the crook of their legs, rolling up into spherical shapes when it was raining.

The rain-avoiding behaviour is a time-honoured tradition among the pandas. Experts at the zoo reveal that pandas are particularly sensitive about their heads, which harbour the essential senses they rely on to interact with their environment. When the panda's head is compromised by rain, it can hinder their ability to see, smell, and hear, which are critical for foraging and detecting threats.

So, during showers, pandas instinctively go to great lengths to shield their heads from disturbance. As for the rest of their body, it's not as much of a concern. With their thick fur and skin built to withstand the chill and dampness, pandas are well-equipped to handle the elements.
