Protestors Heckle King Charles as He Arrives at Parliament for State Opening
London, 7 November 2023—King Charles III was heckled by protesters as he made his way to Parliament for the State Opening today. The protesters chanted "Not my King!", and "what do we want, democracy, when do we want it now".
The State of Parliament Opening ceremony included marching bands and other marching soldiers.
The King appeared unfazed by the protests and continued to wave to the crowds.
The State Opening of Parliament is a formal ceremony in which the King outlines the government's legislative agenda for the coming year. It is a major event in the British political calendar and is usually attended by members of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
The protests today are a sign that not everyone in the UK supports the monarchy. Anti-monarchist sentiment has been growing in recent years, and it is likely to continue to grow.
