Hurricane Otis Leaves a Trail of Destruction in Acapulco, Mexico
This footage was filmed and produced 1 November 2023.
The aftermath of Hurricane Otis, a devastating Category 5 storm that pummeled the Mexican Pacific resort city of Acapulco, has brought grim news as the death toll and number of missing individuals continues to climb. Authorities in the state of Guerrero revealed that the impact of Otis has now left nearly 100 people dead or unaccounted for.
Last week, Hurricane Otis struck Acapulco with unrelenting winds reaching speeds of 165 miles per hour (266 km per hour). The storm caused widespread devastation, submerging the city, ripping off rooftops from homes, hotels, and businesses, inundating vehicles, and disrupting communications, as well as road and air connections.
The dire situation led to instances of looting as Acapulco's population, numbering nearly 900,000, grew increasingly desperate for essential supplies, such as food and water.
Evelyn Salgado, the governor of Acapulco's home state of Guerrero, confirmed that 45 people lost their lives, and 47 individuals remain unaccounted for, as reported by state prosecutors.
Mexico's federal civil protection authorities reported on Sunday that the death toll had reached 48, with 43 casualties in Acapulco and an additional five in the nearby town of Coyuca de Benitez. The recovery and relief efforts are ongoing as the affected communities strive to cope with the aftermath of this devastating natural disaster.
