The effort to protect the white-headed titi monkey that only lives in Colombia
This footage was filmed and produced 4 April 2023.
More than 5,000 hectares of forest in the Colombian Caribbean have been conserved to prevent the population of the cotton-top tamarin, a species endemic to the Colombian Caribbean and one of the most endangered primates on the planet, from disappearing.
To protect this monkey, which weighs no more than 500 grams, work has also been done to conserve its natural habitat, the tropical dry forest, which is also in a critical state in the country.
The cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) is a primate endemic to the tropical rainforests of Colombia, which according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is Critically Endangered. This primate, which weighs no more than 500 grams and is distributed in seven of the country's departments - Choco, Antioquia, Cordoba, Sucre, Bolivar, Atlantico and Magdalena - is an emblematic species, which has even been considered the Colombian panda. However, as it is a charismatic species, its survival has been threatened mainly by illegal wildlife trafficking and the expansion of the agricultural frontier.
This video illustrates various shots of the white-headed tamarin in the Colombian tropical dry forest, April 4, 2023.
