Brazilian tourist arrested 'for causing multiple collisions in drink driving rampage' in Thailand
A Brazilian tourist was arrested for allegedly causing multiple collisions in a drink driving rampage in Thailand.
Driver Marcelo da Conceicao Nascimento led police officers on a high-speed pursuit after crashing into several vehicles in Phuket on November 9.
The police were notified at 8:30 am that Marcelo's white four-door Toyota pickup truck had crashed into a car at the Government Savings Bank intersection in the Patong district.
The fleeing Brazilian was reported to have sped towards the Wat Suwan Khiri Wong temple with law enforcers on his tail. He stopped in front of the temple but revved his engine when they approached, and drove off toward Patong Hill.
Traffic camera footage shows how the pickup struck a van carrying eight tourists, causing it to flip over when it hit the hill embankment. Only the van's driver was reported injured.
Marcelo then descended down the mountain toward the Soi Bang Thong area with narrow streets, where he injured a Patong police officer and struck a man and a woman riding a motorcycle at the entrance to Bang Thong village.
By this time, the police had already noted Marcelo's license plate and set up checkpoints to block his escape. He was forced to abandon the truck at a golf cart repair shop and run away on foot, but officers quickly caught up to him and arrested him.
Marcelo was hauled to the Kathu Police Station and underwent a breathalyser test, which revealed his blood alcohol concentration as 202.
Police said they remanded him in custody while they gather the evidence to file charges against him.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
