Paddle harder! Heroic effort saves pup swept away in South India floods, with a little help from kindly locals
A lucky pup in South India had determination, stamina and a little help from local youths to thank when its life was surely saved from a flood on Tuesday 7 November.
The river was swollen after a large amount of excess water was released from the Gomukhi Dam (also spelt Komuki) in Tamil Nadu state, after heavy rains in Kallakurichi district.
As a result, floodwaters submerged a footbridge in Virugavur area, as a dog was trying to cross it.
The poor pup was swept away but was determined for that not to be the end and paddled furiously to reach safety, despite appearing to make very little progress against the fierce current.
Seeing its situation, some kindly local youths reached out to the pup when it finally got close enough, and pulled it onto the bridge, from which it was swept away again.
Fortunately, the youths quickly grabbed it and this time carried it to shore, where it shook itself off and appeared remarkably unbothered by the whole ordeal.
