Look at those huge yellow eyes! Curious Tawny Frogmouth chick staring, rocking and cuddling dad.
Australian Tawny Frogmouths, (Podargus strigoides brevipes) - supreme masters of camouflage, are nocturnal birds related to Nightjars. They are active at night, sallying from perches to capture a wide range of invertebrate and small vertebrate prey. A trio of Frogmouths bred near the edge of Herdsman Lake this year, successfully raising one chick. On this day the fully fledged chick was perching between its parents in a Flooded Gum (Eucalyptus rudis) at Herdsman Lake. The larger male Frogmouth is on the left, the chick is in the middle and the female is on the right. The chick was curious – watching me with its huge yellow eyes, moving its head from side-to-side and even cuddling with its dad.
