STORYLINE:
A special 50th anniversary concert was held in Beijing on Friday celebrating the Philadelphia Orchestra's 1973 visit to China.
It was the first tour to the People's Republic of China made by an American orchestra.
Davyd Booth, a violinist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, was on the 1973 trip. At that time, he didn't imagine the orchestra and himself would be so closely connected with China in the following half century and beyond.

"It was one of the most important events of my life, and it's still a strong thread that has continued for 50 years, I have to say. And the experience of seeing the country at that time, 1973, very different from what you see today. We discovered food, we discovered customs, we discovered incredible history. This is one of the things that I so really envy the Chinese people that our history of the United States only goes three, four hundred years, really, and you have thousands of years. It's just astonishing to see that everywhere, so beautiful and so beautifully preserved. So we would go out and the people would come up and we would communicate, and it was really a wonderful beginning of instantaneous friendship. I think we have touched Chinese people's lives in their hearts and certainly, the Chinese culture and the people have also touched our lives and hearts, and the one thing that I always say is that people all around the world, the hearts are the same."
Over the past 50 years, the Philadelphia Orchestra has returned to China for over a dozen times. Its cooperation with its Chinese counterparts has been flourishing.
