Hundreds of people gathered at the Cenotaph to observe two minutes of silence to commemorate the UK’s war dead at 11am, while violent clashes erupted between police and union flag-waving protesters attempting to reach Whitehall.

Thousands of police officers were on duty in London as pro-Palestine demonstrators gathered in Hyde Park for a march towards Victoria.

The Home Secretary had described the pro-Palestine demonstrations as "hate marches", because they coincided with Armistice Day. The Prime Minister called them "disrespectful".

Within sight and earshot of the Cenotaph, groups of people waving St George's flags and union jacks attempted to break through police lines by the Ministry of Defence and Embankment, chanting "England till I die" and clashing with officers.

After buglers sounded Reveille to end the two-minute silence, the protesters chanted "England, England, England", before the Defence Secretary, veterans and schoolchildren lay poppy wreaths by the memorial.
