The Dohazari to Cox's Bazar Railway, one of the priority development projects of Bangladesh, was inaugurated on Saturday.

The 103.5-km railway, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), was partly built by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and the China Railway Group Limited (CREC).

It is expected to bolster connectivity and transportation infrastructure in the South Asian country.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): CHEN YONGYI, Project manager of lot two of the project
"This railway project connects Bangladesh's largest port city Chattogram to Cox's Bazar, a coastal tourist city of Bangladesh. Upon completion, the project will cut travel time from Chattogram to Cox's Bazar from more than five hours to two hours. It will also facilitate logistics. For example, lots of local food, resources and crude oil can be hauled directly from Chattogram to Cox's Bazar. It is also part of the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor, which is connected by this railway to reach Myanmar and China's Kunming. After completion, it will play a great role in promoting the development of the economy."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): GHULAM MOHAMMED ALOMGIR, Chairman of Max Group (co-constructor of lot two)
"This is a good and pleasant day for us. This is such an important project. A lot of people can come and use. And this is very useful for (the development of) Bangladeshi railway, for the citizens of the whole country. People from all over the country will use this railway line, to come here and see this, and about this iconic building we have done. This is really international quality."
