A pregnant buffalo was rescued after it fell into a 23-foot-deep well in Pasia, West Sumatra Province, on November 23.

Yuhendri Alex, one of the rescuers, said the incident began when a buffalo herder named Masril had lost his pregnant buffalo when going to get another cow out of its pen.

"It was on his way back to the pasture that the shepherd lost his buffalo. He looked for it and found it had fallen into an old well that had dried up and the surface was covered with weeds," Alex added.

The shepherd called the fire brigade and they used water to fill the well so the animal would float to the surface, making the rescue a touch easier.

After around 30 minutes, the buffalo was safely rescued.

A pregnant buffalo fell into an old well in Indonesia. The animal's evacuation was dramatic.

Footage filmed in Pasia, Agam regency, West Sumatra province, today (13 November) shows firefighters filling the well with water to remove the buffalo trapped at the bottom.

Yuhendri Alex, a rescuer, said the chronology of the incident began when Masril, a buffalo herder, grazed his animals in a grass field not far from its pen on Monday morning.

He tied up the pregnant buffalo and then left her to get another animal, a cow, out of its pen.

"It was on his way back to the pasture that the shepherd lost his buffalo. He looked for it and found it had fallen into an old well that had dried up and the surface was covered with weeds," Alex added.

The shepherd called the fire brigade to evacuate the animal.

Officers arriving on the scene found the poor buffalo trapped at the bottom of a well estimated to be 23 feet deep.

Officers filled the well to the brim with water so that the buffalo would float and be more easily pulled to the surface.

The buffalo was successfully removed after about 30 minutes of evacuation efforts.

A slow rescue is expected to save the female buffalo and her foetus.
