Storm Debi lashes Newquay, Cornwall, leaving trail of power outages and travel woes
Storm Debi, the fourth named storm of the season, has unleashed its fury across the UK, leading to Met Office warnings for wind and rain in northern England and north-east Scotland. The storm, exhibiting gusts over 70mph, has caused power lines to topple and significant travel disruptions. Coastal areas are bearing the brunt of large, battering waves.
Initially striking Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, followed by Wales, Storm Debi made its presence felt before moving eastwards into the North Sea on Monday evening. Northern Ireland has been particularly hard hit, with thousands of customers experiencing power outages.
The Met Office issued an amber wind warning for parts of south-west Northern Ireland, extending the alert to include risk to life and property, covering regions like Cumbria, Lancashire, and Merseyside until 16:00. In addition, yellow weather warnings for wind were also in place across much of northern England and Wales, later extended to include cities like Sheffield, Manchester, and Newcastle until 21:00. The storm's impact has been widely felt, with 77mph gusts recorded along the Welsh coast.
