Birds of a feather: British driver spots spectacular starling murmurations

A British driver spotted his first mass gathering of starlings this autumn when he saw thousands of the birds on overhead lines while he was driving to Wadebridge in Cornwall on the morning of 11 November.

Two days later he saw a huge murmuration of starlings taking to the air in the evening at nearby Rough Tor.

The spectacular formations form when local starlings come together above a communal roosting site just before dusk.

The number of starlings in the UK increases when the seasons turn cold, as local birds stay put while starlings from colder countries in eastern Europe migrate to warmer places like Britain for the winter.
