STORYLINE:

India's retail inflation eased to 4.87 percent in October, the latest government data showed Monday.

According to the data released by the federal ministry of statistics and program implementation (MoSPI), the inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in October is 4.87 percent. In September, the CPI was 5.02 percent.

The food inflation has also eased to 6.61 percent in October from 6.62 percent in September, the data showed.

According to officials, the price data are collected from selected 1,114 urban markets and 1,181 villages covering all states.

"During the month of October 2023, NSO (the National Statistical Office) collected prices from 99.8 percent villages and 98.6 percent urban markets while the market-wise prices reported therein were 89.0 percent for rural and 92.0 percent for urban," the ministry said.

The ease in retail inflation in October is mainly attributed to a sharp moderation in food prices, especially of vegetables, and the impact of the LPG price cut.
