STORYLINE:

China has been helping African countries boost food security and alleviate poverty by introducing hybrid rice.

At a forum on China-Africa cooperation in agriculture in China's Sanya, officials from various African countries have spoken positively about China-Africa cooperation in this regard.

Currently, more than 20 African countries are cultivating hybrid rice, and China continues to provide technological support to those countries to increase their hybrid rice output.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): LAILA BARNABA LOKOSANG, Senior Technical Advisor to the Commissioner (Food Systems), African Union
"It (hybrid rice) grows faster, right? It is climate smart. It is resilient to pests. You sell more. And it will then have the spillover effects of having the farmers not only get money, but they'll get enough food."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): DEMBA SABALLY, Minister of Agriculture, Gambia
"Our Chinese counterparts have introduced hybrid (rice) seeds that can yield up to 10.8 tonnes per hectare in expert supervised fields and up to 7 tonnes per hectare in the farmer supervised fields, compared with about 2.5 tons per hectare with our traditional rice seeds. Their contribution has almost tripled our productivity."

SOUNDBITE 3 (French): GAOUSSOU SANOU, Secretary general of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources, Burkina Faso
"All farmers and civilians in Burkina Faso can benefit from that. Thereby Chinese hybrid rice helps a lot in poverty reduction in Burkina Faso."
