Parks rangers Whittem and Pazdar lead press preview of first ever public tours of the island in New York on November 15, 2023. For centuries Hart Island was used and still in use as a public cemetery to bury bodies of people which were not claimed, especially during epidemics and pandemics. Some parts were used by the Department of Correction as part of the prison system. Island was used to house people recovering from infectionist diseases, for mental patients. In recent years it underwent major upgrades and was transferred from the Department of Correction to Parks Department and City Human Resources Association. It is still used as a public cemetery and will be held under the guidance of park rangers tours twice a month.
