STORYLINE:

The eighth edition of China Trade Week kicked off in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi Wednesday, as senior officials renewed calls for deepening economic cooperation to realize mutual benefits.

John Ololtuaa, the principal secretary in the State Department of Tourism, said the three-day event offers an opportunity for Kenya to showcase investment opportunities across diverse sectors of the economy to entrepreneurs from the Asian nation.

While acknowledging that China remains Kenya's largest trading partner and source of investments, Ololtuaa said the government intends to elevate this cooperation to cover tourism, technology transfer and cultural exchanges.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): EDWIN MASIVO, Kenya country director for Global exhibitions
"(We are) hoping to have a lot of partnerships signed, joint venture agreements. We are looking forward to having a lot of Chinese companies appointing Kenyan companies as exclusive distributors of their products produced in China."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): ZAHOOR AHMED, Vice president of Middle East International Events (MIE)
"Global trade, partnerships, new businesses, new opportunities, and we are coming out of a three-year gap on global trade which has caused disruption, both economically from tourism, from investments. And our platform has been that bridge, the investment bridge I mentioned in my opening speech. We want to make sure that we can bring investments back to Kenya, back to East Africa."
