Pupils flee classroom in northern Thailand as earthquake shakes neighbouring Myanmar
Terrified pupils fled their classroom as an earthquake in Myanmar also shook buildings across northern Thailand on the morning of Friday 17 November.
CCTV shows the moment the school was rattled by the tremors in Chiang Rai province. After the tremor subsided, the teacher led the children outside to an open area for further safety measures.
The tremor was centred near Keng Tung province in neighbouring Myanmar's Shan state and struck at a depth of nine kilometres at 8:37 am local time, according to the Earthquake Surveillance Division of the Thai Meteorological Department.
Locals in northern Thai provinces, including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Nan, and Bangkok, reported feeling the quake, which shook homes, knocked down bottles from grocery store shelves, and triggered school evacuations.
There have been no reports of severe damage so far. Authorities said they were surveying potential damage caused by the earthquake.
Chiang Rai Governor Puttipong Sirimat ordered local authorities to survey damage in each area in order to gather information for helping victims who were affected.
