A strange festival of throwing cowdunk at each other was held in the Talawadi hills, south India
In Erode district, near Sathyamangalam, Thalavadi hill, a strange festival of beating cow dunk each other was held. Kumtapuram village near Thalavadi has a 300 year old Bireswarar Temple. Every year on the fourth day after the end of Diwali, the festival of throwing cow dung on each other is held in this temple.
On the day of the festival, the programs started with special pujas. Earlier all cow dung in the town was collected and piled behind the temple. Then there was a Swami call from the pool.
In the Swami Calling program held in the presence of the village elders, one person was mounted on a donkey to beat tarai patpats and was brought in a procession to the Swami temple, decorated with mustaches made of grass.
Pujas were performed to the decorated Bireswarar in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. After that, more than 100 children and youths, all shirtless, made balls of dung dumped at the back of the temple and hit each other and enjoyed playing.
The program of chanting was held for about 2 hours. Then everyone bathed in the pool and went to the temple to worship Bireswarar.
A few centuries ago, an old man who lived in the area used to pour grains. Later, after the death of the elder, the people of the village dumped dung on the place where the grain had been dumped and made a garbage heap. In this case, one day when the garbage was cut with a spade to take it to the agricultural land, there was a Shiva Lingam inside the garbage dump. Seeing this, they used to perform puja.
They said that since the Shiva lingam was found from the dung heap, the Shaniyadi festival is held on the 4th day after Diwali, and based on that, this festival is held every year.
