On September 23 2021, Indonesia made history in the transportation sector with the launch of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train which achieved a record as the fastest fast train in Southeast Asia. This project is the result of collaboration between the Indonesian government and Chinese companies. The Jakarta-Bandung fast train, which is named "Indonesia China Fast Train" or "KCIC", has a maximum speed of up to 350 kilometers per hour (km/hour). With this increase in speed, this train surpassed the fastest fast train in Southeast Asia, namely the Singapore-Malaysia fast train which has a maximum speed of 300 km/hour. This project began in 2016 after the Chinese railway company, China Railway Corporation, and the Indonesian Toll Road Regulatory Agency signed a memorandum of understanding. Within the framework of the "One Belt, One Road" initiative initiated by China, the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train is one of the pilot projects for infrastructure cooperation between the two countries. In its development, the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train project involved Chinese companies, namely China Railway International Group (CRIG) and China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) as the main contractors. At first, this project experienced a few obstacles and delays, but since 2020, progress has increased significantly. The Jakarta-Bandung fast train has a track of around 142.3 kilometers which is specially designed to maintain safety and optimal speed. This train will connect Manggarai Station in Jakarta with Kertajati International Airport in Majalengka, West Java. On its journey, the train will pass through several stations including Karawang Station, Walini Station and Tegalluar Station. Apart from high speed, the Jakarta-Bandung fast train also offers superior comfort and facilities to its passengers. This train uses the latest technology with a sophisticated safety and security system. In addition, the train interior is designed to be comfortable and modern, equipped with ergonomic seats, Wi-Fi connectivity and adequate entertainment facilities. With the launch of the Jakarta-Bandung fast train, it is hoped that it can improve connectivity and speed up travel between the capital cities of Jakarta and Bandung. Apart from facilitating the mobility of tourists and business people, this fast train is also expected to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution in the two cities. Not only that, the Jakarta-Bandung fast train project is also expected to have a positive impact on the Indonesian economy. With the fast train, new jobs will be created during the construction and operational stages, and will encourage the growth of the tourism and industrial sectors in the region. However, like other infrastructure projects, the Jakarta-Bandung fast train also faces various challenges and criticism. Some of the concerns that arise include land acquisition, environmental impacts, and dependence on technology and foreign investment. The government is committed to addressing these issues by ensuring transparency and community participation in the development process of this project.
