Cape Town cathedral holds memorial for humanitarian aid worker killed in Gaza
Cape Town, South Africa- 19 November 2023: The St George’s Cathedral hosted a memorial service for Gift of the Givers team leader, Ahmed Abassi, in Gaza. Agassi was killed by an Israeli air strike after returning from morning prayers on 16 November.
Among the dignitaries who attended and were received by the Dean Of St George’s Cathedral the Reverend Michael Weeder were former South African International Relations Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and anti-Apartheid cleric Dr Allan Boesak.
About 300 people attended the service in the historic cathedral and the keynote address was delivered by Dr Boesak. Boesak called for the BDS (Boycott, Disinvestment and Sanctions) to become an official South African government policy.
