According to estimates by the rating agency Fitch Ratings, catastrophic losses from the impact of Otis are estimated at US$16 billion, while local business chambers estimated the damage caused by the hurricane at US$17.45 billion, requiring at least two years for reconstruction.

The Mexican government has offered economic aid in the form of loans, tax benefits and other actions totaling almost US$3.5 billion.

In addition to the devastation of property and human lives, of which, according to official data, there are some fifty and 27 missing persons, Otis destroyed the surrounding tropical rainforest, of which an economic valuation has not yet been made.

The rugged geography of the site (almost 80% are mountains and semi-flat terrain) is home to deciduous rainforest with different species, typical of a warm sub-humid climate (average annual temperature of 28 °C and average annual rainfall of 1500 to 2000 mm).

The Copernicus images show the city and its surroundings before and after the passage of Otis.
